How to conduct copywriting research FAST
Whenever I review copy for my students, I observe common mistakes new copywriters make.
For example , the other day I reviewed another student's copy and I noticed another mistake.
He wrote an email about a topic but it lacked substance.
Like what happens when somebody tries to explain a topic he or she doesn't know and just mumbles away.
That's exactly what his copy sounded like.
As I read it, I knew he didn't really have knowledge of the topic.
Which means he didn't do any RESEARCH.
Which is quite sad ;).
You see,many new copywriters think just knowing how to write copy replaces the need to know the topic they're writing about.
Nothing can be further from the truth.
Look.
Copywriting does not replace having knowledge of the topic you're writing about.
For example, If I want to write a sales page for a facial cream, and I don't know that market, or that product well enough...
This is what I will do.
First, I won't write anything.
I'd rather get to understand the niche and the target audience first .
I'll do that to discover…
Their buying motivations
Their fears.
Their hidden desires.
I will go to YouTube and watch videos, then read articles, then talk directly to my target audience and ask questions…
Then read books around a topic.
This will fill my head with so much information about the topic and target audience.
Then I'll write.
It's easier to write about what you know or sell what you know…
Than to be ignorant about a topic and hope to get results.
So here's my point.
Don't just jump and start writing copy when you don't understand the niche or target audience.
Do the research needed. Ask the audience questions.
Talk to the target market directly. Watch videos on the topic.
Fill your head with information in that niche before writing copy for that niche.
That's the only way you'll write amazing copy.
