The other day, I asked about the biggest challenges you face with copywriting and email copywriting.
Someone sent in a question about copywriting hooks.
Specifically how to find and use them effectively.
My initial answer was…
“Conduct research.”
But I'll be honest… that’s not a good answer.
So in this email, I’ll break it down properly.
Before we dive into finding copywriting hooks…
Let’s define what a copywriting hook really is.
What Is a Copywriting Hook?
A lot of people think it’s some mystical, hard-to-find thing...
But a copywriting hook is simply anything that grabs your target audience’s attention.
It could be…
✅An image
✅A headline
✅A video
✅Or a mix of all the above
If it stops your reader in their tracks, it’s a hook.
You’ll often find copywriting hooks in the headline of a landing page or the subject line of an email.
Here Are 5 Copywriting Hooks You Should Know (and Use)
#1 – The Benefit Hook.
This hook highlights a clear benefit in your headline or subject line.
Examples:
✅How to Make Money Online Posting 1 Minute Videos on YouTube
✅How to Get 3,000 Quality Leads Every Week
This type of hook attracts and stops your audience because it promises something they want.
#2 – The Story Hook
Stories are powerful.
Use them in your headlines or subject lines to spark curiosity and emotional connection.
Examples…
✅How a Homeless Kid Made $20,000 in 2 Days
✅How a Woman Grew 4 Inches of Hair in One Week
Stories grab attention because people are naturally wired to listen to them.
#3 – The Pattern Interrupt Hook.
This hook works by breaking expectations and catching the reader off guard in a good way.
Examples:
✅Man Bites Dog (unexpected twist on “Dog Bites Man”)
✅One-Legged Golfer Wins PGA Tour
✅Young Boy Without a Degree Outsmarts MIT Professor.
Anything that disrupts the reader’s usual patterns can work as a powerful hook.
#4 – The Curiosity Hook.
This hook builds suspense and makes people want to know more.
Examples:
✅How to Lose 4 Pounds a Week by Eating This Weird $1 Fruit
(“Weird $1 fruit” builds curiosity.)
✅How to Make $1,000 a Day Using the Elon Musk Loophole.
(“Elon Musk Loophole” is the curiosity trigger.)
Curiosity hooks work even better when combined with benefits or stories.
#5 – The Mechanism Hook
A mechanism is the “thing” that delivers the result your audience wants.
Examples:
✅How to Lose 5 Pounds a Week Using a Weird $1 Fruit
Here, “weird $1 fruit” is the mechanism.
People are naturally drawn to what makes something work.
Use this to your advantage.
These are five of the most effective hooks I personally use.
There are more but start with these.
Now, the big question…
How Do You Find These Hooks?
It’s simple:
You research.
Research helps you…
✅Understand your audience
✅Discover what gets their attention
✅Learn what they’re used to (so you can interrupt those patterns)
✅See what your competitors are doing
When you understand your audience deeply, finding the right hooks becomes easy.
